Shi Nansheng: The concept of IP is becoming increasingly standardized, and good content will always be the core
Shi Nansheng, who has worked in the mainland for many years, believes that in the past two years, the concept of IP has become more and more standardized, but it still takes time to establish an IP system. When people are interested in content, there are huge benefits.
Original title Shi Nansheng: The concept of IP is becoming increasingly standardized, but many people are still too vigilant.
On March 15, famous filmmaker Shi Nansheng and Doug Mitchell, producer of the "Crazy Max" series, and producer of "Lego Big Movies" David Oslan and Shan Dongbing, producer of "The Expendables 2", attended a forum held by the Hong Kong Film and Television Expo to talk about the development and operation of IP films.
Shi Nansheng, who has worked in the mainland for many years, believes that although intellectual copyright in the mainland is becoming increasingly perfect, it still takes time to establish an IP system."In the past two years, everyone has become more and more standardized on the concept of IP, but there are still many things that are unclear. When we buy IP, many people are too vigilant and unclear about the meaning."
The mainland lacks the foundation for property rights protection and the construction of systems cannot keep up with the development of the industry
. In 1984, Shi Nansheng and Tsui Hark established a film company and have produced 33 films so far. Since the 1990s, the two have joined forces to create Jet Li's version of the "Huang Feihong" series. During her six years in the mainland, she also produced blockbuster movies such as "Di Renjie's Heavenly Empire" and "Di Renjie's Divine Capital Dragon King".
"I think the problem we are facing is the protection of IP. There was no such foundation in the mainland before, but now it is slowly improving. In fact, it is not only the responsibility of the filmmaker, but also the operation of the entire machine." Shi Nansheng said.
Shi Nansheng recalled that in the few years he first came to work in the mainland, many people could not even understand the spirit of the contract."Every time he signed a contract, the other party would ask if he didn't trust him. After 2003, the China government introduced a number of policies to revitalize the film industry, and the box office also experienced rapid growth. Everyone is becoming more and more standardized on the concept of IP, but many things are unclear. Many people are overly vigilant and understand the meaning."
Good content is always the core."Journey to the West: Conquering the Demon" has no success formula.
In the box office rankings of China's film history, four of the top 20 Chinese films are films adapted from "Journey to the West". They are "Journey to the West: Conquering the Demon","Journey to the West: The Monkey King Threatens the Bone Bones Three","Journey to the West: A Troubles in the Heaven" and "Journey to the West: The Return of the Great Sage".
"The theme of the Monkey King can not only attract Chinese people, but also attract attention in the international market. When people are interested in content, there are huge benefits." Shi Nansheng said this and mentioned his early experience in producing Jet Li's version of "Huang Feihong"."In the 1990s, there were already more than 100 'Huang Feihong' films, but Tsui Hark used Jet Li and changed Huang Feihong's way of speaking, giving the audience a sense of novelty." In fact, casting selection is also an adaptation of IP.
Speaking of this, Shi Nansheng also talked about the "Journey to the West: Fugitive Demons" that was not long after being completed: "Everyone will find that we have many new ideas, because even IP movies have no formula for success. As the times change, there will be a new perspective."
As a veteran filmmaker, Shi Nansheng also expressed his outlook for China's film industry: "Many young people like entertainment. I hope this era will pass soon, because they are just spending their time and don't want to think about morality, value, etc. Our film industry is young, and so are popular films. Audiences must learn how to behave themselves, and producers must continue to learn."
