Clinton's novel reveals the "inside story of the White House" and Hollywood competes for copyright
This will be Clinton's first literary work adapted into a movie. Since leaving the White House in January 2001, the former U.S. president has published three books.
Original title: Hollywood is brewing a battle to gain film rights to novels written by former President Bill Clinton
This week, Hollywood will meet with a politically important figure, and one of the fiercest battles this year over film adaptation rights for copyrighted works is quietly unfolding.
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and best-selling author James Patterson will meet with film producers this week to discuss film adaptation rights for their co-authored novel,"The President Is Missing." The novel will be published in June 2018.
Currently, the copyright to the project is in the hands of Richard Lovett of brokerage firm CAA and is considered top secret. Sources revealed that on Monday, a ten-page proposal had been sent to potential buyers and top producers. The proposal was not only watermarked, but was also sent through a dead link. However, not everyone who received the proposal would get the opportunity to meet with Clinton and Patterson.
Sources also said Clinton and Patterson will also meet with producers of their own interest this week, including J.J. Abrams, Steven Spielberg and George Clooney. As a close friend of Clinton, producer Steve Bing is said to also meet with the two men.
This will be Clinton's first literary work adapted into a movie. Since leaving the White House in January 2001, the former U.S. president has published three books. As a well-known writer, Patterson has five works that have been moved to the big screen, and he has also served as a producer of the three recent adaptations. Eight other works have been adapted into TV series, the latest being CBS's TV series "Zoo." Currently, he is writing the script for the CBS TV series "Instinct", which is based on his own novel "Murder Games."
We don't yet know the details of the story of "The President Disappeared", but a statement issued on May 8 showed that the book will involve "inside stories that only the president can know." Clinton himself said the book "will include details I know about the job, life in the White House, and how people work there." This will be fun."
