according to foreign media reports, negotiations on Hasbro's acquisition of Lion Gate ended last week because of price differences. The source said that the details of the negotiations could not be disclosed because the contents of the negotiations were confidential. It is unclear whether the two companies will renegotiate thereafter.
this is not Hasbro's first attempt to enter Hollywood. Hasbro considered merging DreamWorks Animation in 2014, but lost to Comcast. Lions Gate has produced "Hunger Games" and "divergent" films, and this year's six Oscar winner "La La City" is also released by Lions Gate. Lionsgate bought US cable station Starz for $4.4 billion in 2016. Its series include Mad Men, Women's Prison, Nashville, Spartacus, Temple and Legend of the Ancient Battlefield.
Lions Gate currently has a market capitalization of about $5.8 billion, while Hasbro is as high as $13 billion. As the talks ended, Hasbro shares fell 1.9% to an average price of $103.90, while Lions Gate shares fluctuated little between $29.25 a share.
Hasbro owns a number of well-known brands, including Monopoly, Transformers, Little Ma Poly, and plans to launch Star Wars 8 and Raytheon 3 toys one after another this year. The Transformers series is in its fifth installment, and the Rainbow Pony Movie, voiced by Emily Blunt, Zoe Saldana and Levi Schreiber, will be released by Lionsgate.
