June 1 animation "China School" cradle_Shanghai Film Group Shanghai Fine Arts Film Studio 1 celebrated its 60th birthday. From "Making a fuss in Heaven" to "Nezha Making a fuss in the Sea", from "Little Tadpole Finding Mother" to "Landscape Love", from "Golden Monkey Subdues Demons" to "Treasure Lotus Lantern", there are also three monks, nine-colored deer, Afandi, Snow Children, Xiyue Qitong, Hulu Brothers, Black Cat Sheriff, Mindless and unhappy... After a sixty-year-old period, Shanghai Beauty Film Factory has produced more than 600 animation works, which has won the reputation of the "China School" in the animation industry.
Standing at a new starting point and facing increasingly fierce competition in the international film and television market, generations of China animators have never forgotten their original aspirations and carried forward the past and opened up the future.
"I only made one animation in four years" The classics are hidden in the details
."I only made one animated movie in four years. This is completely different from today's film crews who shoot one movie in four months. The efforts of the older generation of artists can be described as great." Ren Zhonglun, President of Shanghai Film Group, was very moved on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Shanghai Fine Arts Film Studio.
Shortly after the founding of New China, the Shanghai Film Studio Art Group was born. On this basis, Shanghai Art Film Studio was established in 1957. One of the most important milestones in its creation is "The Troubles in Heaven". "Old artists endure loneliness and work overtime every day in order to make the animated image that belongs to China people stand up." Zheng Hu, the current head of Shanghai Meiying Factory, said.
More than half a century ago, the birth of "The Troubles in Heaven" fulfilled Wan Laiming's "dream of traveling to the West", one of the pioneers of early animation in China. Wan Guowei, the son of Wan Laiming, who is now over eighty years old, recalled that his father loved "Journey to the West", especially making trouble in the Heavenly Palace. In the 1950s, he carried a booklet "Journey to the West" with him everywhere, wrote and drew on it, marking the frame of the entire cartoon script on it.
"The most difficult thing to complete was the image design of Sun Wukong. Everyone always felt that it was not perfect enough. Later, we asked the 'Southern Monkey King' who was performing Shaoxing Opera to explain the movements one by one. The monkey had to have a 'monkey accent', so that the animated Sun Wukong image was finally created." Yan Dingxian, the 81-year-old leader of the original painting team of "The Troubles in Heaven", recalled.
To this day, Shanghai Beauty Film Factory still maintains the creative habit of old artists to "be down-to-earth and down-to-earth" for cartoons.
Carrying the banner of animation aesthetics with China characteristics
"I don't want to imitate!" These are the five words that the late Twei, the first director of Shanghai Beauty Film Factory, often mentioned. He is known as the "father of ink animation" in China and one of the founders of the "China School" of animated films. Under his leadership, since the 1950s, Shanghai Meiying Factory has embarked on a path different from the animation development model of Western countries in China.
Since the preparation of "The Proud General" in 1955, Tewei's art film creation has tried to explore the combination of traditional China opera and animation. Soon, the Shanghai Beauty Film Factory drew inspiration from Qi Baishi's traditional paintings. The art team worked on it day and night, and China's first ink animation,"Little Tadpole Looking for Mother," was born. Later, there were "Mudi","Deer Bell","Landscape Love", etc., and the "China School" in the animation industry took shape, carrying the banner of animation aesthetics with China characteristics.
A number of 80-year-old artists said that animation "China School" can gain a foothold in the world by not forgetting the original heart and sticking to cultural self-confidence.
Qian Yunda, who entered the Meiying Studio in 1957, was sent to the Czech Republic for an internship. On the day he returned to China, he made his ambition to "shoot animation with a China flavor." Later, he directed "The Golden Conch" with a special selection of paper-cutting techniques; after the reform and opening up, he directed "The Book of Books and Qi Tan", highlighting the style of China's classical mythology.
He, who is 88 years old this year, said: "Our puppet pieces, cutting paper, plus art, music, lines, performances, etc., are all about looking for national animation."
New Jiazi, Animation "China School" seeks rejuvenation
In recent years, China's film industry has developed rapidly, and the box office of many domestic animated films has exceeded 100 million yuan. The cumulative valuation of the intellectual property rights of China original animation images accumulated by Shanghai Meiying Factory exceeds 10 billion yuan, and the rejuvenation of the animation "China School" still has a long way to go.
On June 1, Shanghai Beauty Film Factory released a five-year plan for new films and creations from 2017 to 2021. Traditional classic animation images will be "reborn" and a batch of new animation series will also be released.
In the summer of 2017, the theater animation masterpiece "Food Rhapsody with Big Ears" will be the first to debut. What makes "fans" even more excited is that during this year's National Day period, Avanti, dubbed by Tong Zirong, and Bayi, who dubbed "partner" Li Yang, appeared on the theater screen for the first time to perform the 3D theater animation "Avanti".
Focusing on the development of classic images, Shanghai Beauty Film Factory will also produce theater animations "Snow Children Accompanying My Life" and "Sun Wukong's Flame Mountain", and the newly produced "The Magic Boy Sangsang Trilogy","Quintet","Giant Garden","Confucius The Way" and "Little Bear Steamed Bun" are expected to cover animation audiences of all ages and build a more comprehensive animation entertainment industry chain.
It is worth mentioning that, as an inheritance of ink animation, the art blockbuster "The Gora Flying" inherits the innovative spirit of previous artists and brings the ink animal image of contemporary Chinese painting to the big screen. "The new generation of beauty films is not simply copying the work of its predecessors, but constantly innovating. I believe that the future will surely usher in the revival of the 'China School' of animation." Young ink animation director Shi Yi said.
