Wanda has acquired Legendary Pictures for US$3.5 billion
. On January 12, 2016, Wanda Group just announced the acquisition of Legendary Pictures of the United States for no more than US$3.5 billion in cash. This is the largest overseas cultural merger by a China company to date.
Legendary Pictures has many co-produced films that have won high box office in China, including "Godzilla","Inception","Jurassic World" and "Pacific Rim". Once the contract with Legendary Pictures is approved, it will become the world's highest-grossing film company.
Wanda is applying to relevant departments for a special policy on the import of Legendary Pictures films. Legendary Pictures 'revenue and profit targets in 2016 are based on current policies in mainland China. If the special policy is approved, it may significantly increase Legendary Pictures 'revenue and profits.
This acquisition of Legendary Pictures is also a solid step taken by Wanda Group towards its goal of becoming a global and vertically integrated film company.
In fact, as early as August 2012, Wanda Group spent US$2.6 billion to acquire AMC Entertainment. Since then, Wanda paid US$600 million to Hoyts, Australia's second largest diversified group.
Wang Jianlin, chairman of Wanda Group, once revealed that Legendary Pictures plans to generate revenue of 4.02 billion yuan in 2016; Wanda Pictures Media plans to generate revenue of 1 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 71%; Wuzhou Film Distribution plans to box office 9 billion yuan, with revenue of 1.76 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 10.6%.
Analysts believe that once Wanda Pictures is successfully listed, Wang Jianlin's territory in the film and television field will grow even stronger. After Wanda Pictures acquired Legendary Pictures of the United States, its revenue in 2016 will also become the largest company in the world's film industry.
