Lu Chuan: Real capital is intelligent business and art are not separated

As one of the representative academic directors in China, Lu Chuan is one of the few domestic directors who can easily distinguish between genre films and commercial films. He believes,"Regarding the problem between business and art, if you want to make an artistic film that expresses itself independently, you must express yourself to the extreme, balance costs and market relations as much as possible, and not let investors lose money." If you want to make a commercial movie, let yourself have a lot of fun. I don't think business and art are separated.

The original title Lu Chuan talks about the wisdom of the real capital for film investment

. As one of the representative directors of the academic school in China, Lu Chuan is one of the few domestic directors who can easily distinguish between genre films and commercial films. At a time when China films continue to set new records, on July 15, Lu Chuan came to the MIIC Mobile Internet Innovation Conference. At the cultural forum, we shared with the audience how to weigh the relationship between artistic feelings and reality.

Regarding the label of artistic film director, Lu Chuan first said that this era may be an era that has been redefined. If you give a movie to define whether it is a literary film, a commercial film, or a pornographic film, it all requires consideration."And for me, I just make movies according to my own ideas."

The popularity of capital has given me the money to make movies willfully

, but in fact, real capital is wise.

Although his works have been controversial in recent years, Lu Chuan is still willing to try different types of films. From the original "Searching for a Gun", from "Hoh Xil","Nanjing Nanjing","Nine-Layer Demon Tower" to the recent "Born in China", basically the type of every film Lu Chuan made is different. When asked what drove him to make such a change, Lu Chuan said frankly,"My driving force is money. Because money can be willful."

"This is a very fortunate thing. In fact, it's not that I personally have money. I was supported and funded by many people along the way. Whenever I make a different movie and cause a lot of criticism, I find that I don't become more and more lonely, but after a round of criticism, there are many rich people silently walking beside me, taking out some money, and making a similar but different "scolding" movie next time. In the course of these ten years, these people have been pushing and inspiring me. This is a spiritual fellow. Everyone hopes to be able to see different content reflecting different thinking. This kind of willfulness is very extravagant in the film industry."In Lu Chuan's view, although many people say that in recent years, capital and the power behind it have been increasingly involved in the rules of the film world." But I found that in the past ten years, real capital has wisdom, choice, and judgment. This is the result of everyone's joint efforts."

When it comes to film investment, Lu Chuan believes that the greatest joy of the film itself lies in creation, because it is something that creates miracles and dreams. Venture capital choices are mainly based on people."In the film industry, if all investments are IP and data-oriented, it will make the industry more and more conservative. In fact, I think that independent films and original films are an indispensable thing in every era. In a healthy and healthy content market, several types of investments should be made."

Cao Xueqin wrote "Dream of the Red Chamber" all her life. Now the

screenwriter wants to write several "Dream of the Red Chamber" a year. This is terrible

. When asked why good themes and good scripts are becoming increasingly scarce, Lu Chuan said based on his father's professional experience,"My father was a screenwriter. I remember that when he was writing" Sky Is Above "and" Snow Without Traces ", he completed a script in two years, and the manuscript fee was very low. Before writing, go experience life, collect materials and interview. After you get the front-line material, you can digest it and then write it. It is not that the quality of screenwriters is weaker than before, or that the literary ability of predecessors is not as strong as that of predecessors, but that there is too much money and too many projects now. Any screenwriter will tell you that there are about five projects in hand. This is like falling in love. Talking about one person at a time may involve a lot of enthusiasm, and talking about ten people at the same time. In this case, physical strength and energy are greatly tested. Now because there are too many projects, Cao Xueqin has written "Dream of the Red Chamber" in her life. Now many screenwriters want to write several "Dream of the Red Chamber" a year."

"Every industry will not always be particularly hot. Good works will appear after the popularity of this industry passes. Good works can appear when you are poor, because people can still persist and write there at that time. After experiencing prosperity, something may come out when the time comes,"Lu Chuan added.

Why did I shoot "Nanjing, Nanjing" and "Hoh Xil"

because I was afraid of death? I wasn't brave?

Compared with Lu Chuan's recent works, such as the action thriller "Nine-Layer Demon Tower", the previous "Hoh Xil" and "Nanjing! Nanjing!" It discusses the meaning of life and death. For example,"The King's Feast" analyzes dictators. Lu Chuan said that the reason why he would make those types of movies before was actually because he was a person who feared death."Sometimes I think, in a few decades, it would be a pity that my body would be gone. I wouldn't be able to eat delicious food. I wouldn't see everything in the world. You would feel that this world has nothing to do with you, and you would think about spirit and body, spirit and death. "Hoh Xil","Searching for a Gun","Nanjing! Nanjing!" They all discuss the issues of life and death. I don't think I'm brave, so I've always wondered why some people are brave. There are actually many people in an era who can come up with the truth, but there are still relatively few people who dare to tell the truth in an era and ignore the faces of others. Even fewer people can practice their beliefs with their lives. This is why "Hoh Xil" and "Nanjing!" Nanjing!" I will explore this matter."

So, how to balance the relationship between artistic films and commercial films? Lu Chuan believes,"As for the issue of business and art, if you want to make an independent artistic film, you must express yourself to the extreme and balance costs as much as possible. Market relations, and don't let investors lose money. If you want to make a commercial movie, let yourself have a lot of fun. I don't think business and art are separated.

The times change quickly and

want to calm down and pursue the spirit of craftsmanship.

For artistic films with profound significance and commercial films with obvious fast-moving tendencies, Lu Chuan said,"I think an era changes rapidly, not to let us eat more garbage, nor to expose us to more garbage. I hope that one day, I will calm down and enjoy some products that have been truly tempered by thought, or some things that have been carefully worked and polished, and pursue a craftsmanship spirit. If you always watch 'Running Man' every day, and then watch 'Running Man' season after season, no one can stand it. Now is a very carnival era. You must come here to know whether something special can settle down after the carnival. I remember that in the 1980s, there were a large number of literary works. The works of China literature such as Ge Fei, Ma Yuan and Mo Yan appeared at that time, including Zhang Xianliang's "Green Tree", which was a golden age of literature. Therefore, I think we have to observe this era on the one hand, and on the other hand, we have to wait for something that can truly shock us to come out."

When asked what the criteria for making the next movie would be, Lu Chuan said,"It's very vague until you find it. Once you encounter a subject that can make you burn, make you particularly excited, and make you think about it day and night, that is what you want to do."
