Original title Jiang Nanchun Zhihu First Answer: Looking back on Focus Media's five years in

recent days, many well-known people have posted articles on Zhihu Station to congratulate Zhihu on its fifth anniversary. Among them are Jiang Nanchun, founder of Focus Media, a well-known entrepreneur. It is said that this is the first time Jiangnanchun has posted a post in Zhihu Station. In addition to congratulating Zhihu on its fifth anniversary, it also summarizes the development process of Focus Media in the past five years and its own growth and thinking.

This

is the first question I know how to answer. I want to answer this question because I rarely have time to relax and concentrate on life. I take this opportunity to write it down.

Over the past five years, the obvious major node is that Focus has gone through privatization, bid farewell to Nasdaq and successfully returned to A shares.

In 2011, after leading Focus through rapid expansion, acquisitions, and a series of stalking events in the early years of its establishment, I began to rethink the company's management model and long-term strategy. From the launch of the privatization invitation in August 2012 to the completion of the privatization in May 2013, it has been a full ten years since Focus was established, and Nasdaq has gone through eight years. For me, at the beginning of the second decade, companies need to calm down and think about the further improvement of their core competitiveness and seek stronger development momentum. This also means that my next journey will be how to breed a new future for focus.

Also since 2011, as a media person, I have deeply felt the impact of the mobile Internet. So in the past few years, how to connect Focus with the mobile Internet has become the theme of my continuous learning, thinking, exploring and testing the water. Focus has gradually begun to experiment with entertainment, content, and knowledge-based marketing, and has laid out Wi-Fi/iBeacon hotspots in advertising screens, trying to use Internet of Things technology, mobile Internet, cloud computing big data systems, etc. to enhance longer-term and stronger competitiveness.

In 2011, shortly after becoming a father, I gradually began to pay attention to the balance between work and family. I tried my best to fly back to Taiwan every weekend to accompany my family. I also paid more attention to the education of seriously ill children and young people in society. I remember that in June 2011, I noticed on Weibo a news that a 7-year-old girl lost her legs in a car accident trying to save her companions. I forwarded it and asked colleagues from Focus's local branch to visit her on her behalf. They quickly rushed to the hospital where the little girl was located and sent the relief money. We simultaneously broadcast these processes on Weibo. At that time, I had about 1 million Weibo fans, which attracted a lot of support and retweets. Later, we launched a Weibo topic of "dividing everyone into action", focusing on Weibo public welfare assistance. Because Focus has branches across the country, when we inquired about the hospital or home address of the recipients, we arranged for local colleagues to conduct inspections and verification, striving to be transparent and open, and to expand and attract public participation as much as possible. I think Weibo public welfare can combine publicity and action. While netizens pay attention and forward it, they are also carrying out actual public welfare activities.

Patrick J. McGovern (founder of IDG) has a saying that deeply influenced me. He said that there are three things to do well in life: one thing to be proud of, one thing to be interesting, and one thing to be beneficial to society. In my heart, I feel that charity is as important as career success and regard it as an integral part of the value of life. In 2004, seven classmates including Wang Bing and I jointly launched the Aiyou Charity Foundation, which is committed to medical assistance to orphans and poor children. In a flash, it has been its 11th year. In 2015, Aiyou was named the first place in the list of China Charity Foundations by Forbes. This is an affirmation that inspires all of us. In addition, there are projects involving the Aifei Rural Teacher Training Program and Beautiful China Rural Education. Their influence is growing, allowing every child to bloom in the sun. This is our common ideal.

In the past five years, my mentality has become more stable from the privatization of Focus to the return to A shares. I firmly believe that "life is the purpose of service and making money by the way." Just like building a noodle shop, if you are thinking about how to make noodles more delicious and healthier, and customers can eat more comfortably, then you are making money by the way. It is doomed. If you think every day about how to make this bowl of noodles bigger and thicker, make it into a chain noodle shop, or even make a bowl of noodles in the capital market, you will find that you are not far from bankruptcy.

Over the past five years, the changes in the capital market, economic environment and personal mentality have witnessed my choices and growth at every step. There have been times when I was in high spirits and moments when I was in crisis. I have experienced passion and dreams, as well as suffering and pain. I think this is the greatest wealth in my life. Like many of the best entrepreneurs in China, I believe that in another ten or twenty years, when our children gradually grow up and become sensible, we are qualified to tell him that we have worked hard for our lives, struggled, gritted our teeth and persisted, we have proved our ability and value, we have reached the height we can achieve, and we have lived without regrets.

Some people say that success requires general trends and incentives, but I believe that greater success requires challenges, changes, and cruel competition. I am glad that I have encountered the best era. Behind countless new challenges and changes, there are also endless opportunities and more possibilities. This is the charm of this era. In the next five years, some people doubt whether China's economy will continue to make great progress, and some people worry whether China's economy will enter winter, but I think that for a permanent learner and reformer, every year will be a new spring.
