Good morning everyone!
I just mentioned the question of how Internet companies can make movies. I don't represent typical. I am atypical because I have been in the film industry and have just joined an Internet company for more than half a year. I am also deeply touched. It is true that the film culture of Internet companies and traditional film companies is very different, but when you face products, we will find that it is actually the same. When you make a product you want to make, its attributes are not much different or changed. What I said today may not explain how an Internet company makes movies, but I hope to share some of how we should make movies.
Today, let me talk about where good movies come from. I stand more as an investor in film projects, or I stand from the perspective of looking for more good projects for our market. You can understand me as a buyer, or Understand me as a collector. Let me talk about how I personally understand good movies from this perspective.
Why talk about good movies? Because the market determines whether a movie is good or bad, everyone will know after watching it. But before, you didn't have a good movie pursuit, but it was relatively easy to make a movie. Now, many film companies are popping up in the industry. Making movies seems like an easy thing, but good movies are not so easy.
Looking at the current market and judging from the movies that actually happen on the market every day, you will find an increasingly scary thing. If the quality of your movie is not good enough, you will have enough games on the first and second day of release. Sometimes it is useless. This is a particularly scary thing. In the past, if I got more releases, more screenings, and more resources, I could do it well. But now it is not. When we saw that Crazy Zootopia was squeezed by domestic blockbusters and did not have such a high share, its promotion was almost non-existent. In such market conditions, it was able to achieve such a high market box office, why? Because it's a good movie. There are some movies that are favored by thousands of people, but the box office results are far below our expectations because they are not good for ordinary audiences. This is a very real problem. Moreover, with the development of our Internet, mobile Internet, our social platforms, media platforms, and everyone, the spread of all public opinion and the spread of word of mouth have become high-speed communication, which can only be spread through the most offline methods. The outbreak of word of mouth basically takes three days. The good or bad reputation of a movie directly determines its vitality. If you are just satisfied with having a product with resources, it is not enough. This is the reality we face.
Based on this reality, I said that only good movies can there be a good market, and other things have nothing to do with us.
What is a good movie? Many people are saying, you will see many people on the market saying that I have resources, I have platforms, I have IP, including I have big names, how many big names I have to support me, and I will definitely succeed.(The fact is) It may be possible, but it may not be. I think these resources can become the corresponding conditions and foundation of a film during its growth, but they do not mean a certain thing. I don't think that all these things exist are the core and foundation that really determines the quality of a movie. They should not be something we should think about with the greatest energy. When you have these things, it's actually not the most important thing. When you have these things, what you should think about most is how to make a movie well. How can we deduce that we have good movies, I am a project investor, how can I find good projects, how can I discover good future market opportunities? We sorted out a few simple small elements.
Where do good movies come from?
First, yes, the film industry is a highly individual-intensive industry. It is not a capital cluster or labor-intensive, but classified to individuals. Individual talent sometimes determines the market vitality and market value of a film. How to have the right people and how to cooperate to find the right creator is what we need when creating any project.
At the same time, when you find the right person, do the right thing. It is difficult to say what is right. It is based on your judgment of the market, based on your understanding of society, based on the direction of social development, and how we can provide better cultural consumption products to future audiences in the market in the future, or better. Film products, your own tastes and your own preferences, and even your corresponding judgment of this society are inevitably related to. The right people, the right things, and the judgment of future trends, there is a very interesting phenomenon in movies nowadays. When we discuss a project today, it often has to go through scripts, production, and marketing. Basically, it will be two years later. If it is an idea now, it may be three or five years later. First of all, who will operate the project at the core, or if you operate the project yourself, whether you are a reliable person, and whether you are willing to bear the relative price and persist in completing this thing in a relatively long period of time.
The script is the most important thing. Do you have a very complete story with a very high degree of completion? What kind of company does this matter makes a big difference. In the past two years, we have seen the phenomenon in the market. The box office of the movie is good, but the company is gone. The difference between the company that manages it will directly affect the fate of your future movies, including your budget, whether your budget and your theme match the type you make, and whether the movies you make will actually have a relationship with society.
So judging from these perspectives, you will find its possibilities and find opportunities and space for good movies.
A good script in the eyes of investors, what is a good script? First, you can read it, if you don't read enough scripts, you don't know what's good or bad. Just like you don't know what's good when you don't see enough movies. For scripts, you can read it, you can't stop, and you can remember it. Using these three criteria, you basically know whether the script is worth reading. Even if you are a layman and can't stop after reading it and remember it very clearly, there will be no problem.
