Box office sales from January 1 to December 26 totaled $11.0596 billion, a 2.3% increase from last year. One publisher commented on the past as "the craziest weekend I have seen in a long time, with so many films seizing the same market at the same time." Many films opened on Christmas Day to prepare for the upcoming Oscars, with box office reaching 278 million this weekend alone.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore, said PG-rated films such as "Finding Nemo 2: Where Are Dolly Goes","Pet Secret","Fantasy Forest","Zootopia","Ocean Pooh" and "Singing" made significant contributions to the box office in 2016. Superhero fantasy films such as "Captain America 3: Civil War","Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice","Suicide Squad" and "Doctor Strange" also performed well.

Degarabedian said: "This is a year where the film market is more ups and downs than the largest roller coaster in the park, and we will have the largest harvest year in North American history. Although there were several sequels that were unsatisfactory in the summer after the start of the New Year, the overall performance was stable. Various works emerged one after another in the autumn and holiday seasons, locking in advance for 11 billion yuan. 2017 may be far better than 2015 and 2016."
