Shanghai City Mayor Yang Xiong said in his government work report at the Municipal People's Congress that the opening of the Disney Resort was one of the city's major achievements in 2016.

Shanghai Disney Resort officially opened on June 16 last year, after a month of trial operation. Initially, it caused controversy due to high catering prices and long queuing times in the theme park. In the first three months after opening, the operator ensured the smooth operation of this large-scale project by controlling the number of daily ticket sales.

Both Disney and the Shanghai City government are trying their best to downplay the competitive relationship between Shanghai Disney Resort and Hong Kong and Tokyo Disney.

Shanghai Disney is mainly aimed at approximately 330 million people living within a three-hour drive of the surrounding area. Fan Xiping said that 53% of Shanghai Disneyland tourists come from the Yangtze River Delta provinces, and Shanghai residents account for 27% of the visitors.

The first phase of Shanghai Disney Resort covers an area of 3.9 square kilometers and is the latest expression of Shanghai City's efforts to become a global city.
